A small loop antenna appears as a very large resonant circuit. The loop itself can be viewed as a large single turn inductor of this circuit. The larger the loop diameter, the greater the efficiency. If it is made larger then about 1/10 wavelength in circumference it will no longer be classified a small loop and its radiation pattern will begin to change. Wavelength, λ, is the ratio of the speed of light over the frequency at which the antenna is designed to operate at. Small loop antennas are sometimes called the magnetic loop because it acts like an inductor. Electrically large loop antennas are defined as antennas that have a loop length of approximately λ.

For a given area, a circular magnetic loop antenna will be more efficient than a square magnetic loop. You need to make the square ones approximately 26 percent bigger than the round ones to get the same efficiency. Large diameter conductors, and low resistance connections are essential to good efficiency in a small transmitting loop.
